Blueberry, also known as “Berry Blue,” is an indica-dominant strain comprised of 80% indica and 20% sativa created by breeder DJ Short in the 1970s. He began crossbreeding landrace strains that developed in the wild without human interference. He crossed an Afghani indica with a Highland Thai sativa and Purple Thai sativa, yielding the hybrid strain aptly named for its fresh blueberry fragrance and taste and bright blue hues in its leaves and buds.
It’s also a very potent strain with a THC content of between 16% and 23.5% and a CBD level of around 0.26%. Blueberry is noted for its ability to combat anxiety and stress, facilitate calmness and ease restlessness. Blueberry is an ideal strain for managing chronic pain and insomnia, and some have claimed that Blueberry is arousing as well.
It is one of the most popular strains on the market, and in 2000 Blueberry won the High Times Cannabis Cup in the Best Indica and Best Overall strain categories. It received third place in the Overall category in 2001.

Terpenes
Blueberry’s dominant terpene is myrcene which gives the strain its fruity aroma. Myrcene combined with THC and Cannabinol may contribute to the sleepy effect of Blueberry.
Beta-Caryophyllene
Humulene
Linalool
Pinene
Flavonoids
Flavonoids are one of the lesser-known compounds in cannabis, and little is known about the flavonoids present in each strain because they are rarely tested. Like terpenes, flavonoids add to each strain’s flavor and fragrance profile.
Studies have shown that the major flavonoids present in all cannabis plants are cannflavins A, B, and C.
Effects
Blueberrys has been reported to have the following effects:
- Calming
- Comfort
- Relaxing
- Sleepiness
The following adverse effects have also been reported:
- Dizziness

Often described as a “one hit and quit strain,” Blueberry is notably potent. For this reason, it is best taken in relaxed settings and is reported to have a variety of physical and mental health effects.
Medical Applications
People with PTSD have more CB1 receptors in areas of the brain associated with fear and anxiety. Targeting CB1 receptors with plant cannabinoids (phytocannabinoids) can help relieve some anxiety associated with PTSD. THC may also aid sleep and reduce the occurrence of nightmares.
THC can stimulate the production of the hunger hormone ghrelin.
A combination of THC and CBD can help reduce the frequency and intensity of muscle spasms and any related neuropathic pain.
THC can stimulate the release of the sleep neurotransmitter, adenosine.
Cannabinoids like CBD can help modulate serotonin transmission, giving it anti-depressant and anxiolytic effects.
Cannabis contains anti-inflammatory and analgesic compounds that can help reduce or distract from pain, including THC, CBD, and beta-caryophyllene.
Dosing
Blueberry can be calming and aid relaxation in low to moderate doses, but not necessarily overly sedative. Blueberry can be narcotic in higher doses, especially if the flower measures above 20% THC. In higher doses, Blueberry may help manage chronic pain, insomnia, and the side effects of chemotherapy.
Growing
Blueberry plants are suitable for beginner growers as they are straightforward to grow and require a shorter flowering time than other strains. Blueberry flourishes outdoors but requires regular pruning to prevent powdery mildew from dominating it.
During the early seedling stage (two to three weeks), Blueberry requires high nitrogen levels. Soil should be prepared with high-grade fertilizer in the greenhouse before the plant is shifted outdoors.
There are a few pruning techniques used to increase yield. “Topping” (cutting the plant’s main stalk) sculpts it into a bush shape. If it grows into this structure, it will put more resources into developing buds and take up less space. Pruning also increases airflow to prevent powdery mildew infection.
Blueberry cannabis has a reputation for producing high yields compared to other strains, attributed to its aforementioned bushy shape. Indoors it can provide 18 ounces of bud per square meter. However, outdoors, you can expect a yield of up to 25 ounces per plant. In addition to nitrogen, silica and iron are minor nutrients that could also help boost the health of your Blueberry plant.
Height
Blueberry needs space to flourish when grown indoors – this fruity strain can reach a height between 20-30 inches. Outdoors it is expected to grow to over 3 feet.
Humidity and Temperature
Blueberry requires a milder climate than other cannabis strains. It thrives at temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (18.3 to 26.7 degrees Celsius), though it can handle colder nighttime temperatures without a significant effect on yield.
Flowering
Blueberry begins to flower in about seven to nine weeks. When grown under ideal conditions, buds can be expected in less than two months.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Blueberry strain good for?
+
Due to its potency, the Blueberry cannabis strain is most helpful in treating stress and pain and may also help alleviate feelings of depression or anxiety. Additionally, Blueberry may help treat insomnia, not by forcing sleep but through its ability to suppress negative and stressful thoughts that prevent people from falling asleep.
Is the Blueberry strain an indica or a sativa?
+
How does Blueberry strain make you feel?"Indica" and "sativa" terms are often not useful when determining the chemical composition and helpful when understanding growth patterns. Blueberry is commonly referred to as an indica, although it is an indica-dominant hybrid with lineage in Afghani and Thai landrace strains. The strain comprises 80% indica and 20% sativa.
How does Blueberry strain make you feel?
+
Blueberry strain is noted for being stress-relieving, and this strain induces a generous state of euphoria. Due to its powerful indica content can leave you feeling sleepy, so it is best taken at the end of the day.
