My next adventure in homemade health and beauty items is a new and incredibly simple homemade aftershave lotion. Not sure about any other ladies (or guys!) out there, but I reallyhate shaving because my skin hates it so much. I typically break out, no matter what I do. So, I wanted to dive into this and I also wanted to make a uni-sex version that both my husband and I could enjoy together. His skin is super dry and shaving makes is 238,743 times worse! My version not only helps heal the little nicks on your skin but keeps it moisturized too.

All You Need for the DIY Aftershave Lotion Recipe:

If you don’t have coconut oil, you could also use a sensitive skin lotion or aHomemade Lotion. Witch Hazel without alcohol is preferred for this recipe. (Alcohol will have a drying effect on your skin and can burn sensitive skin.) It can sometimes be hard to find, but you can always purchase it on Amazon. If you want to use what you already have, you can substitute organic apple cider vinegar, although it may not have all of the same effects on your skin.

What To Do to Make Homemade Aftershave Lotion:

Choose a tall container for mixing and add in softened coconut oil. This is pretty easy to do. If you have a microwave, you can nuke the oil for a few seconds, or you can even use a hair dryer to soften it since it doesn’t take much heat. Having the oil softened makes it easier to mix in the witch hazel.

For amounts… I recommend a 3 parts coconut oil to 1 part witch hazel mixture. So if you add 1 cup of coconut oil to your container, you will need 1/3 cup of witch hazel for the recipe. If your skin is extremely oily, add a bit more witch hazel. Stir all of the ingredients together until everything is blended. You can add a bit of Vitamin E oil if you’d like at this point for some extra moisturizing.

As long as you’ve partially softened the coconut oil, you should be able to blend the ingredients together easily. If you are having trouble or if your coconut oil just will not soften, go ahead and blend with an electric mixer or immersion blender.

To use this homemade Aftershave lotion, just take out a little after shaving, when you step out of the shower and massage into your skin until absorbed. Coconut oil tends to give the lotion a bit of an oily feel, so if you don’t like that, take a clean, dry cloth and blot off the excess oil.

Aftershave Lotion Storage

I store my lotion in these little inexpensive tins. They can be used for many different purposes and re-used after they are cleaned out. You can store this homemade aftershave lotion right in your bathroom but be sure that it doesn’t get too hot or too cold as that will affect the consistency.

Essential Oils to Add

Lavender Essential Oil – For a nice calming scent and effect.

Juniper Berry Essential Oil – Great alternative to Lavender for more of a “mens” scent.

Cypress Essential Oil – Perfect for oily skin. Nice “woodsy” type of fragrance.

Blend of Jasmine Essential Oil – This works well for mature skin types.

I love this stuff. And with only two basic ingredients, it’s easy to make and easy to use. You will be surprised at how soft and smooth this will make your skin after regular use.

Up next you will want to make easy homemade shaving cream and coconut oil lotion!
