What is the difference between a nerd and a geek? ›

Geeks are “collection” oriented, gathering facts and mementos related to their subject of interest. They are obsessed with the newest, coolest, trendiest things that their subject has to offer. Nerd - A studious intellectual, although again of a particular topic or field.

The first documented appearance of the word nerd is as the name of a creature in Dr. Seuss's book If I Ran the Zoo (1950), in which the narrator Gerald McGrew claims that he would collect "a Nerkle, a Nerd, and a Seersucker too" for his imaginary zoo. The slang meaning of the term dates to 1951.

There may be significant overlap between the three, but if anyone would care about the subtle distinctions, it would be a nerd. A nerd is thought to be a highly intelligent person who has a singular passion about an academic pursuit. They tend to be either socially inept or asocial.

Nerds typically enjoy highly intellectual hobbies and games that are done alone or one-on-one. Geeks tend to enjoy pop culture and they may share their interests more often with others. (Of course, many nerds enjoy a few geeky things and many geeks enjoy a few nerdy things.)

Contrary to what the media may say, girls like nerdy guys. Intelligence and humor are traits that all girls appreciate, so show her your smarts, passion, and funny side. Be sweet, listen to what she says, and learn about things she likes.

Nerds tend to be associated with specialized technical knowledge, more interested in detailed theory than trends, and more given to serious study of a subject matter. Both are now considered far more desirable for their expertise and enthusiasm for even esoteric topics than in the past.

It seems that it is no longer considered a bad thing to be a nerd in recent times. T-shirts and clothing proudly proclaim their wearer as “Nerd” and “Geek.” There was the rise of new media like Slashdot, which advertised as “News for Nerds.” Shows like The IT Crowd and The Big Bang Theory have been huge successes.

Nerds are particularly intelligent people who choose to spend their time in non-social activities that mostly require studying. Geeks are also particularly intelligent people but they spend their time in social activities, obsessing over specific games, books, topics, objects.
