Is Almere worth a visit? ›

Built 50 years ago on what was once the seabed, a visit to Almere is surprisingly different. As the newest city in the Netherlands, it has a lot to offer and is never boring! Known locally as 'Ally', this city has it all: modern architecture, loads of shops, special nature reserves and beautiful beaches.

Ever since it was first built in 1975, Almere has been a vital part of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. The city is still young.

Almere was built in the 1970's on land that was reclaimed from the sea in a feat of Dutch engineering. Now Almere has been developed into a well-planned city with residential areas, parks, lakes, modern infrastructure and excellent transport connections.

The city is still young. Yet Almere is firmly anchored in this ancient urban area, which has a rich history in international trade, science and the arts, and is renowned for its tolerance and diversity.

Giethoorn is called the "Dutch Venice" for good reason: it has more than 55 miles of canoe trails which connect the canal-side homes, eateries, hotels, and museums in the town center.

Houses are spacious with gardens, off-street parking and located near parks, playgrounds and lakes. Kids tend to cycle on their own. There is a good selection of schools including international options in Almere, which are also accessible from Lelystad.

Etymology. First attested as de toekomstige stad Almere in 1973. Named after the ancient hydronym Almere (first attested in 755-768), likely a compound of aal (“eel”) and Old Dutch mere (“lake, pool”). The current city is located roughly where the former lake was located.

Why live in Almere and Lelystad? The area has a modern architectural aesthetic and residential areas are spacious, thoughtfully planned around schools, parks and shopping areas. Typically, houses here have more space than in Amsterdam, which is easily accessible by public transport or car.

If you have limited time in the Netherlands, it's not worth going out of the way to get to Giethoorn. I'd recommend an extra day in Amsterdam over a day trip to Giethoorn. But if you have more time, it can be worth visiting Giethoorn to drive a boat around the canals can be a great way to spend your day!

Recommended as a side village travel with Amsterdam trip. If you wanna visit colourful places in Netherlands other than Amsterdam, then I would definitely recommend Zaandam. It's located 15minutes away from Amsterdam by train and most of the stores and restaurants are inside cute and colourful buildings.
