Here at PublishPress, we’re very focused on the publishing experience in WordPress. We love to see large organizations use WordPress to publish their content.

I analyzed the main sites for all major branches of the US federal government and found that WordPress is used for several very famous websites. I’ll showcase them in this blog post.

WhiteHouse.gov

The highest-profile website in the US government runs on WordPress. The WhiteHouse.gov website moved over to WordPress in 2017 after previously using Drupal for many years.

State.gov

The U.S. Department of State uses WordPress for their main website at State.gov. This is a fully-featured website with policy details, employment information, and information on travel to countries worldwide.

America.gov

America.gov is run by the State Department and is a promotional platform for news about US foreign policy. The site has a blog format and publishes opinion articles, videos and infographics.

U.S. Embassy Websites

This was the most surprising part of my research for this post: every US embassy in the world uses WordPress. The sites all use the same theme and the same plugins. Even the metadata is identical on every embassy website.

WordPress runs about 35% of the web, but only a few official, federal websites. We hope that will change in the next few years.

If you’re interested in digging deeper, there’s a theme specifically designed for government sites called GovPress. You can also find a list of many government websites using PublishPress, including the Department of State, the City of Philadelphia and the State of Washington.

Almost all the 2020 US elections were powered by WordPress.
